Reykjavík City Walking Tour
A guided 2.5-hour walk through old Reykjavík — Hallgrímskirkja, the Old Harbour, Rainbow Street, the Sun Voyager, and Tjörnin pond — with a Reykjavík-born guide.
About this tour
A 2.5-hour walking tour designed for guests who want context, not just photographs. We start at Hallgrímskirkja and end near the parliament, covering Reykjavík's defining landmarks plus the lesser-known stories — the Cod Wars, the Austurvöllur protests of 2008, and the city's emergence as a small but fierce creative capital.
What's planned
Meet at Hallgrímskirkja steps
10 minFront steps of the church. Optional bell-tower ticket available — buy at the door before or after the tour.
Hallgrímskirkja
20 minGuðjón Samúelsson designed the church to mirror the basalt columns at Svartifoss. The Leif Eriksson statue out front was a 1930 gift from the United States.
Skólavörðustígur — Rainbow Street
20 minWalk down the painted rainbow street, past the city's best ceramicists, knitwear shops, and the Mál og Menning bookshop.
Old Harbour and Sun Voyager
30 minReach the harbour where the whale-watching fleet docks. Pause at Jón Gunnar Árnason's Sun Voyager — a stylised Viking ship pointing north toward Snæfellsnes.
Harpa Concert Hall exterior
10 minOlafur Eliasson and Henning Larsen's basalt-hexagon glass façade — Reykjavík's most-photographed building after Hallgrímskirkja.
Tjörnin pond and Austurvöllur
30 minFinish at the city pond and the Alþingi parliament square. We close with the 2008 pots-and-pans protest story before answering questions and pointing you to a recommended café for the rest of the afternoon.
