DAY 1: SEE THINGVELLIR AND GEYSIR. GO TO AKUREYRI

Take the morning Sterna scheduled bus at 8:00 am from BSÍ bus terminal Reykjavík to start this Iceland holidays adventure. This day is a non guided bus trip with stops in Thingvellir national park and the famous Geysir area. Then you travel between two glaciers over the moonlike Kjölur highland route with stops in Kerlingarfjöll highland resort and Hveravellir. Kerlingarfjöll is a tremendously active geothermal area laden with hot springs and colorful rhyolite stone mountains and Hveravellir offers the opportunity to dip into a hot spring pool located next to the resting stop. Your day ends in Akureyri often called the capital of the north where you have number of options of exploring the area the next day.

DAY 2: AKUREYRI AND SURROUNDINGS

We recommend that you plan this day ahead if you want to take one of many day tours operated from Akureyri in the morning. You can choose to explore what the town of Akureyri has to offer by foot or you can choose between varieties of guided and non guided day tours. For example: Take a tour of the Eyjafjörður area, go whale watching in Húsavík or in Dalvík, take a guided day tour to Lake Mývatn or go caving in Lofthellir ice cave with Saga travel (we recommend waterproof clothing).

You can stay for more than one day in Akureyri to explore the surroundings. Just make sure to let us know when you are heading to Hvammstangi for Seal watching and Vatnsnes peninsula so we can make reservations in time.

DAY 3: SEAL WATCHING TOUR AND GO BACK TO REYKJAVIK

Take the morning Sterna scheduled bus towards Reykjavík at 8:30 am. You jump off in the small northern village of Hvammstangi, a place known for huge seal colonies close by. In an 8 hour program you visit the best budget wool store in Iceland, have a meal in a local restaurant (soup and bread). At 1 pm you head out for 1 hour and 45 minute seal watching tour by boat with English guidance. In the 2011 season there were 110 trips and seals were seen on the rocks on every trip, from 12 and up to 95 seals. On board you are served hot cocoa and homemade baked goods.

After the boat trip you enter the Icelandic Seal Center where you can learn more about these fabulous creatures of the sea. Thereafter you will go on an English audio guided bus tour around Vatnsnes peninsula to enjoy the nature, diverse birdlife, more seal watching from land and visit the ogress canyon Kolugljúfur. Around 8 pm you will take the afternoon Sterna scheduled bus to Reykjavík and finish your Iceland holidays adventure.
